With a strong culture toward science and technology advancement, HKUST has relentlessly been exploring new research tasks, questions and topics, taking the realm of research to greater depths. Over the years, HKUST's faculty has earned international recognition and repute for their research work. Armed with the desire to make more significant contributions to the economic and technological development in the region, the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute and the research centers under its umbrella, will focus initially on research and development, and personnel upgrading needs, in its immediate vicinity and region.
The Research Institute's location at Nansha, at the heart of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), puts it in a good position to work with universities, institutions and businesses in Hong Kong and the PRD.
The centers which are in operation under the auspices of the Research Institute in Nansha are:

One major objective of these research centers is to bring world-class research to Nansha and the PRD. New research topics will be taken on, or programs / centers launched, depending on and according to the needs of local development.
