Research Center
The Digital Life Research Center at the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute is working on the Digital Life concept that utilizes digital technology to connect our lifestyle needs via computers and other digital equipment with electrical appliances and other equipment, bringing about a highly-efficient and comfortable lifestyle for people. For example:
-
Before you stepped out, your mobile phone or PDA could remind you of the things you should bring;
-
When you arrived home, the intelligent devices in your home would immediately identify you, then automatically provide the most appropriate light, music and hot water for you; and
-
All kinds of information will be available at your finger tips, wherever you are, literally at the blink of your eye, etc.
Areas of Focus:
The typical technologies that support the Digital Life concept include three embedded systems ¡ª Mobile Devices, Sensor Networks and RFID, which form the main research focus.
(1) Mobile Devices: typically, these refer to the intelligent cell phone and the PDA. Such devices are expected to be the key to open the door to the digital world.
(2) Sensor Network: bridges between people, environment and the digital world. It picks up changes in the environment and people, transmits the information immediately so that digital devices can respond to make the required changes.
(3) RFID: helps to rapidly locate items, and achieve the functions of guidance and tracking.
HKUST has been working successfully on these technologies for a long time. The intention is to transfer the research results onto applied devices, which then enhance its application and implementation in digital life.

Digital Life Research Center RF Technology Application and Testing Laboratory (Since 18 June, 2010)

Equipped with network analyzer, oscilloscope, logic analyzer, anechoic chamber, etc, the Lab is a platform for research people and students in relative fields.

In December 2008, as one of originators, HKUST and 13 organizations/companies from the Mainland established China RFID Benchmarking Test Consortium. Based on the Lab, HKUST has been cooperating widely with research institutes and universities in the Mainland.
